But one small Midland company has emerged as a leader in its field. In 1994, Compu-SOLVE opened its doors as a one-stop centre for computer products, services and training.
That seven-member team blossomed with the growth of the Internet and now, Compu-SOLVE has 27 employees at its two locations in Midland and Barrie. "At one point, the Internet was a luxury," says Les Tutkaluke, owner, founder and president of Compu-SOLVE. "That's not the case any more. It's an absolute necessity. Even the unavailability of the Internet for 10-15 minutes is just not acceptable anymore." And Tutkaluke knows what he's talking about. His company also became a Telus retail location when it opened its new headquarters on King Street in Midland in 2004. That gives Compu-SOLVE the keys to Telus' wireless network, the Mike direct network, Blackberrys and more. "We have really become trusted experts in the field since we opened the doors in 1994," Tutkaluke says. And while he thinks more growth is on the horizon, he admits Midland is not ideally suited for this sector. "Bell Canada controls everything and there are some technologies that are available in Barrie that are not available in Midland, which is unfortunate," Tutkaluke says.
